A.M. – Day 17 – Do you Hear what I Hear?

Today’s Reading:  Luke 2:8-9

There are quite a few covers of this song, but Do you hear what I hear by Andy Williams will always be the one closest to my heart, because it was the first one I heard – and took note of. Again, one of my father’s records, and I have a reason why I “heard” this one was because it was after Perry Como’s Toyland, and I may have still been there in my head. Maybe I wanted to know if this little shepherd boy knew the way to Toyland – had he heard how to get there? Maybe I should pay attention. I think was 6 or 7. Eventually I did “get” that the song was about Jesus’ birth. That’s what I remember, I’m not sure if it’s true – only because in researching this song I found that itis said that Do you hear what I hear? was not written as a Christmas carol at all, but as a plea for peace during the Cuban missile crisis…
I have never heard this before – You want me to believe that it was written as a plea for peace but using the story of the birth of Jesus? Alllrighty then. If that is actually the case, and not – let’s attach a crisi to our Christmas carol, or let’s attach a Christmas carol to our song about a crisis.I’ve read each section of this song explained away from having to do with the birth of Christ to having to do with the crisis. I don’t know a great deal about the Cuban Missile Crisis, I do feel a little duped though. Between you and me, I don’t think Andy Williams was singing about the missile crisis.

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
“Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite.”

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
“Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea.”

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
“Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold–
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold.”

Said the king to the people everywhere,
“Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light.”
